Les Cayes, Haiti & Providenciales, Turks and Caicos
January 28, 2010 & January 29, 2010
The Albatross Haiti Relief Flights resumed operations on Thursday morning at 9 am EST with N7025N departing Opa-Locka, FL for a non-stop flight to Les Cayes, Haiti. After 4 hours and 30 minutes enroute, upon arrival at Les Cayes, the water was judged too choppy, not for the landing, but for the subsequent departure. The crew decided to divert to the Les Cayes airport, a 3500 foot strip, where they unloaded uneventfully. Included in the medical supplies delivered were sterilization supplies, crutches, canes, wheelchairs and walkers.
The flight had six crewmembers on board: Bill DaSilva, Paul LeVeque, Ray Wolfe, Randy Wilhite, Lynda Leveque and Joe Duke.
The doctors from Marquette met us at the airport. They were tired, but very excited about receiving more supplies. We offered to take a family with us that were trying to get out of Les Cayes, but as we were only going to Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, they decided to try for another airplane. We departed and returned to Providenciales for fuel and an overnight stay.
We will depart to Nassau Friday morning to load supplies collected by Bahamas Methodist Habitat then return to Providenciales for another overnight. Early Saturday morning we will depart Providenciales for Les Cayes to deliver those supplies and pick up the Marquette medical team as they will be returning from their mission.
This has been an incredible experience, utilizing the unique abilities of the Albatross for its highest and best use. The Albatross was first developed by the Grumman Aircraft Corporation for search and rescue. 60 years after it was designed, it is still serving that purpose. Thanks to the dedication of a small group of highly motivated individuals, the Albatross has made a significant difference in the wake of an overwhelming tragedy. Your continued interest, commitment and contributions will make this effort possible. Your help is greatly appreciated; use any of our “Donate” links to contribute.
